Job summary

Education World Ltd is recruiting a dedicated Support Assistant for a Pupil Referral Unit in the Tyne Valley. The role runs Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm, supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs to access engaging learning in a specialist PRU setting.

Ideal candidates show resilience, strong communication, and a collaborative mindset to work with teachers, support staff, and external agencies. A Level 3 qualification and a DBS update service check are desirable requirements.

Qualifications

  • passion for working with young people
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a dedicated PRU team
  • Resilience, patience, and a calm approach to managing challenging behaviour
  • Previous experience working with children or young people is desirable
  • Experience with SEMH or behavioural needs is highly desirable
  • A Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject is desirable
  • A current enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)

Responsibilities

  • Support teaching staff in delivering engaging and effective lessons tailored to individual student needs
  • Provide 1:1 or small group support to students who require additional assistance
  • Support students with SEN, SEMH, behavioural, or additional learning needs
  • Assist with classroom and behaviour management strategies, including de-escalation techniques
  • Supervise students throughout the school day, ensuring their safety and wellbeing
  • Help create a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students and encourage their engagement in education
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff, and external agencies to meet student needs
