Job summary

Byron Wood Academy in Sheffield is seeking a proactive Buildings Officer to join our team. This full-time role (37 hours weekly, 52 weeks) supports the safe, secure and welcoming operation of the academy’s buildings and grounds from 7am to 3pm Monday-Thursday and 7am-2:30pm Friday.

You will maintain safety, carry out routine inspections, manage keyholder duties, assist with basic repairs, and ensure compliance with fire safety and Legionella procedures.

Qualifications

• Has experience of caretaking, site maintenance or facilities management.
• Practical maintenance skills in basic trades.
• Understanding of health, safety and security in a school/public setting.
• Proactive problem solver with ability to work independently.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise a varied workload.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the safety, cleanliness and presentation of the school buildings and grounds, carrying out routine inspections and repairs as required.
• Hold keyholder responsibilities, including unlocking and securing the site, operating alarms and responding to security incidents when necessary.
• Carry out general maintenance tasks, including basic plumbing, joinery, decorating and minor repairs.
• Support the academy's compliance with statutory requirements, including fire safety checks, emergency lighting inspections and Legionella control procedures.
• Keep external areas clean, safe and accessible, including litter collection, leaf clearance, gritting and snow removal during adverse weather.
• Liaise with contractors and support site-based works, reporting any concerns and ensuring work is completed to a satisfactory standard.
• Respond promptly to emergencies such as flooding, vandalism or break-ins, helping to make areas safe and reporting issues appropriately.
• Assist with the movement, collection and procurement of equipment, materials and supplies required for the effective operation of the school.
