Job summary

Byron Wood Academy in Sheffield is seeking a proactive Buildings Officer to maintain the safety, cleanliness and presentation of the school’s buildings and grounds. This full-time role is 37 hours per week, year‑round, with early starts from 7am.

You will work closely with the Operations Manager to carry out routine inspections, basic repairs, fire safety checks and security duties, liaising with contractors and supporting emergency responses to keep pupils and staff safe.

Qualifications

• Experience in caretaking, site maintenance or facilities management.
• Practical maintenance skills for basic repairs.
• Understanding health, safety and security in a school/public setting.
• Willingness to obtain/hold a school minibus driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safety, cleanliness and presentation of school buildings and grounds; perform routine inspections and repairs.
• Hold keyholder responsibilities; unlock/secure site, operate alarms and respond to security incidents.
• Carry out general maintenance tasks (plumbing, joinery, decorating, minor repairs) and support compliance with statutory requirements (fire safety, emergency lighting, Legionella).
• Liaise with contractors and support site-based works; respond to emergencies and procure equipment/materials for operations.
