Job summary

SMART Education Recruitment is seeking a practical School Caretaker in Great Barr, Birmingham, for a 25-hour-per-week contract. You will maintain safety, security, and cleanliness, and respond to maintenance needs across the site.

The role involves daily upkeep, alarms, site security, and liaising with contractors. DBS check via Update Service preferred, with references for the last 24 months. Pay is £15–£18 per hour, with hours Mon-Fri and start ASAP.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in caretaking, maintenance, facilities, or a similar hands-on role.
• Practical maintenance and DIY skills: confidence carrying out minor repairs.
• Understanding of workplace health and safety.

Responsibilities

• Daily site maintenance and upkeep.
• Opening and securing the premises as required.
• Operating alarms and supporting site security.
• Conducting routine checks and inspections.
• Reporting larger maintenance issues.
• Carrying out minor repairs and general DIY tasks.
• Supporting health and safety procedures.

• Monitoring building, equipment and grounds.
• Liaising with contractors and external service providers.
• Helping maintain a high standard of cleanliness.
• Supporting room and area preparation as required.
• Responding promptly to urgent maintenance or site issues.

The Role

Skills and Experience

• Previous experience in caretaking, maintenance, facilities, or a similar hands‑on role
• Practical maintenance and DIY skills: confidence carrying out minor repairs
• Understanding of workplace health and safety
• School caretaking or site experience (advantageous but not essential)
• Ability to identify/report issues, good organisational skills, and a reliable, proactive approach
• Good communication skills with staff, contractors, and visitors
• Willingness and flexibility to support the demands of a busy school
• Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to have one processed
• Ability to provide suitable references covering your most recent 24 months

Additional qualifications in areas such as COSHH, Manual Handling, Asbestos Awareness, IOSH, or Fire Safety would be beneficial but are not essential. Full training can be provided where needed.
