SMART Education Recruitment is seeking a practical School Caretaker for a friendly primary school in Great Barr, Birmingham. This role is 25 hours per week with an immediate start, offering varied, hands-on work to keep the school safe, secure, and well-maintained.

You will be responsible for daily site upkeep, opening/locking, alarm support, basic repairs, and health and safety duties. A DBS Update Service is beneficial, with references covering the last 24 months likely required.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in caretaking, maintenance, facilities, or a similar hands-on role.
• Practical maintenance and DIY skills: confidence carrying out minor repairs.
• Understanding of workplace health and safety.
• School caretaking or site experience advantageous but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Daily site maintenance and upkeep.
• Opening and securing the premises as required.
• Operating alarms and supporting site security.
• Conducting routine checks and inspections.
• Identifying and reporting larger maintenance issues as needed.

The Role

As the School Caretaker, you will play a vital role in ensuring the school buildings and grounds remain safe, secure, clean, and well-cared for. You ll take daily responsibility for the upkeep and security of the site, responding proactively to maintenance needs and taking pride in your work.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Daily site maintenance and upkeep

• Helping maintain a high standard of cleanliness
• Supporting room and area preparation as required
• Responding promptly to urgent maintenance or site issues
• Ensuring the school remains safe and welcoming for everyone

Skills and Experience

• Previous experience in caretaking, maintenance, facilities, or a similar hands-on role
• Practical maintenance and DIY skills: confidence carrying out minor repairs
• Understanding of workplace health and safety
• School caretaking or site experience (advantageous but not essential)
• Ability to identify/report issues, good organisational skills, and a reliable, proactive approach
• Good communication skills with staff, contractors, and visitors
• Willingness and flexibility to support the demands of a busy school
• Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to have one processed
• Ability to provide suitable references covering your most recent 24 months

Additional qualifications in areas such as COSHH, Manual Handling, Asbestos Awareness, IOSH, or Fire Safety would be beneficial but are not essential. Full training can be provided where needed.
