Job summary

Northern is seeking a Train Service Controller in Manchester to oversee real-time operations, ensuring trains run safely, smoothly, and on time across electric and diesel fleets. You will make quick, informed decisions to keep customers moving and ensure units are available for maintenance when needed.

In this role you will manage service in real time, allocate fleet resources, and collaborate with Controller teams, Network Rail, and other operators to minimise disruption while recording

Qualifications

• Experience in rail operations, control or performance environments.
• Ability to stay calm and lead through disruption.
• Strong communication and influencing skills with teams across partners.

Responsibilities

• Manage train service in real time to maintain safety and service quality.
• Allocate and adjust fleet resources.
• Liaise with Controllers, Network Rail and other operators to minimise disruption.
• Record movements and maintenance in control systems.
• Support Duty Control Manager and Team Leader during contingencies.
• Log events and share updates.
• Mentor others and contribute to team projects.
