Job summary

Northern is seeking a Disruption Controller based at the Manchester ROC. You will make real-time decisions to keep services moving during disruption, balancing safety, performance and customer experience across the North.

Working with Train Crew Controllers, Depot Managers and Network Rail, you’ll deploy traincrew resources, develop contingency plans and coordinate across teams to minimise delays. A fast-paced role demanding calm thinking and clear communication.

Qualifications

  • Experience and a good understanding of how the operational railway works.
  • Knowledge of railway rules, regulations and safety standards.
  • A good understanding of railway geography and infrastructure across Northern's network.
  • The ability to make sound decisions in a fast-moving operational environment.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, working effectively with colleagues across different teams.
  • A good standard of general education.

Responsibilities

  • Managing traincrew deployment during disruption to support the operational train plan.
  • Working collaboratively to develop alternative traincrew plans during major incidents.
  • Coordinating with Network Rail and other train operating companies to reduce the impact of disruption.
  • Supporting colleagues with arranging alternative transport for traincrew when needed.
  • Maintaining accurate records through daily event logs and operational reporting.
  • Providing coaching, mentoring and support to colleagues where appropriate.
  • Between 11pm and 6am, supporting the Customer Service Controller when required.
