Job summary

Lady Byron School is seeking a Premises Officer to manage and improve its estates across several Leicestershire sites. You will ensure safety, compliance and high-quality learning environments for autistic pupils, coordinating maintenance, security and contractor work.

You will oversee health and safety compliance, risk assessments and safeguarding expectations, while supporting estate development and space planning with the SLT. Flexible site presence is required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in premises, site, facilities or estates management.
  • Experience of carrying out maintenance and repair work.
  • Experience of managing external contractors.
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation and compliance requirements.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the school's lead for premises-related health and safety matters.
  • Support health and safety policy implementation and monitoring.
  • Conduct site inspections and risk assessments.
  • Maintain records relating to health, safety, maintenance and inspections.
  • Coordinate compliance activities including fire safety, electrical, gas, PAT and emergency lighting checks.
  • Manage site security, safeguarding, and access controls across multiple sites.
  • Oversee maintenance tasks and coordinate reactive/planned works.
  • Source quotations and supervise contractors to ensure value-for-money.

To provide effective management, maintenance and development of the school premises across all Lady Byron School sites, ensuring a safe, secure, compliant and welcoming environment for pupils, staff, visitors and contractors. The Premises Officer will play a key role in supporting the school's vision by maintaining high-quality learning environments that meet the needs of autistic children and young people. The postholder will ensure statutory compliance, oversee maintenance programmes and contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the school's estate.

Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety and Compliance
  • Act as the school's lead for premises-related health and safety matters.
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of the school's Health and Safety Policy.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and risk assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to health and safety, maintenance and statutory inspections.
  • Monitor and coordinate compliance activities including:
    • Fire safety systems and drills
    • Electrical testing
    • PAT testing
    • Emergency lighting inspections
    • Gas safety inspections
    • Security systems
Site Security and Safeguarding
  • Ensure all school sites remain secure at all times.
  • Open and close buildings when required.
  • Monitor security systems and arrange repairs as necessary.
  • Carry out regular checks of fences, gates, locks and access controls.
  • Support safeguarding procedures by ensuring buildings and grounds remain safe and fit for purpose.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, security incidents and safeguarding concerns relating to the premises.
Maintenance and Repairs
  • Undertake routine maintenance tasks and minor repairs.
  • Coordinate reactive maintenance works promptly and effectively.
  • Develop and implement planned preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure buildings, grounds and equipment are maintained to a high standard.
  • Monitor maintenance issues and prioritise works according to risk and operational need.
  • Maintain safe storage and usage of tools, equipment and materials.
Contractor Management
  • Source quotations and obtain value-for-money services from contractors.
  • Schedule, monitor and supervise contractors working on site.
  • Ensure contractors comply with health and safety requirements, safeguarding expectations and school procedures.
  • Maintain contractor records, risk assessments and insurance documentation.
Facilities and Estate Management
  • Oversee cleaning standards across all sites.
  • Monitor facilities contracts and service provision.
  • Manage waste disposal and recycling arrangements.
  • Maintain outdoor areas, grounds, pathways and parking facilities.
  • Ensure classrooms, offices and communal spaces remain safe, clean and operational.
Site Development and Improvement
  • Support estate development projects and building improvements.
  • Assist with space planning and site expansion initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of learning environments that meet the sensory and educational needs of autistic pupils.
  • Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team on strategic premises planning.
Operational Support
  • Support school events and activities as required.
  • Assist with furniture moves, room setups and site logistics.
  • Maintain stock levels for premises-related supplies and equipment.
  • Operate the school vehicle in accordance with organisational procedures.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post.
Person Specification Essential
Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience in premises, site, facilities or estates management.
  • Experience of carrying out maintenance and repair work.
  • Experience of managing external contractors.
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation and compliance requirements.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Good understanding of building maintenance and facilities management.
  • Knowledge of statutory compliance requirements within education or similar settings.
  • Ability to undertake practical maintenance tasks safely and effectively.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workloads and respond to urgent issues.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Competent IT skills and record-keeping abilities.

  • Regular travel between sites required.
  • Role involves manual handling, working outdoors and use of maintenance equipment.
  • Occasional flexibility may be required to support emergency situations or essential works outside normal operating hours.
