Job description

Apprenticeship Coach – Radio Network Technician
Description

In this role, you'll coach, mentor and assess apprentices as they develop the technical knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become successful Radio Network Technicians. This role aligns to industry-level titles such as Skills Coach, Apprenticeship Coach, Technical Trainer, Assessor Coach, Communications Systems Trainer, Radio Communications Trainer, Military Communications Instructor, and Learning Coach. The ideal candidate will bring strong radio communications expertise and enjoy helping others develop their careers in a highly specialised and rewarding field.

The Role

As an Apprenticeship Coach for the Radio Network Technician programme, you'll support apprentices through every stage of their apprenticeship journey, from initial assessment through to Gateway preparation and completion. You'll deliver coaching, mentoring, assessment and feedback that helps apprentices build confidence and competence while ensuring high-quality learner outcomes.

This is a predominantly home-based role supporting apprentices remotely across the UK, alongside regular engagement with the training centre at Bovington. In your first six months, your biggest impact will be building relationships with apprentices, supporting programme delivery, and establishing effective coaching and assessment practices for this growing programme.

What makes this opportunity different is that while coaching and assessor qualifications are desirable, Pearson is primarily looking for candidates with strong radio communications expertise and operational knowledge. Training and support can be provided on coaching and assessment practices, but the specialist radio knowledge is the critical requirement.

What You'll Own

Success in this role means apprentices remain engaged, achieve their milestones, and successfully progress through their apprenticeship whilst receiving a high-quality learner experience.

You will:

  • Deliver robust initial assessments and create personalised learning journeys aligned to apprenticeship standards.
  • Coach and mentor apprentices to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for successful completion of their apprenticeship.
  • Provide timely, constructive and professional feedback that supports learner progress and achievement.
  • Manage a caseload of apprentices, ensuring timely reviews, accurate documentation and ongoing progression towards achievement targets.
  • Conduct workplace observations, assessments and review meetings both virtually and face-to-face where required.
  • Utilise learning systems, e-portfolios and digital tools to maintain learner records and support programme delivery.
  • Build strong relationships with apprentices, military personnel, line managers and stakeholders to support positive learner outcomes.
  • Support onsite delivery and learner engagement at Bovington when required.
  • Contribute to quality assurance, standardisation and continuous improvement activities across the apprenticeship team.
About You

You bring technical expertise in radio communications and enjoy helping others learn and develop. You're self-motivated, organised, and comfortable working independently while building strong relationships with learners and stakeholders.

You'll likely bring
  • Strong radio communications or radio network experience.
  • Experience gained within military communications, defence communications, radio systems or similar specialist communications environments.
  • Excellent communication, coaching and mentoring skills, or the willingness to develop them.
  • Good IT and digital skills.
  • The ability to manage your own workload and work effectively from home.
  • Experience working in a target-driven or performance-focused environment.
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to provide clear learner feedback and action planning.
Desirable
  • Military Radio Operator Class 1 qualification or Detachment Commander qualification.
  • Knowledge of the Bowman communications system.
  • Knowledge of legacy military radio systems such as Clansman.
  • Assessor, teaching or training qualification.
  • Experience delivering apprenticeship programmes.
  • Knowledge of ESFA funding requirements or Ofsted expectations.
What We're Really Looking For

The most successful candidates are likely to demonstrate:

  • Strong radio communications expertise.
  • Experience working in military or defence-related communications environments.
  • A passion for developing people and sharing technical knowledge.
  • The flexibility to learn coaching and assessment practices if not already qualified.
What You'll Get

This is an opportunity to combine technical expertise with meaningful learner impact. You'll help develop the next generation of Radio Network Technicians while working on a specialist programme that's critical to operational capability.

You'll benefit from:

  • A predominantly home-based role with significant flexibility
  • The opportunity to develop coaching and assessment qualifications and skills
  • The chance to work with military apprentices and subject matter experts across the programme
  • A varied role that combines coaching, mentoring, assessment and technical expertise
  • Ongoing CPD and professional development opportunities
Location & Working Pattern

Location: South West England / Bovington Area.

Working Pattern: Primarily remote, home-based working with approximately one day per week at Bovington to support delivery activities and learners. Additional periods of onsite delivery may occasionally be required.
