Job summary

Balfour Beatty Rail is seeking a commercially focused Quantity Surveyor to join our Rail Team for the Sizewell C project. The role is split between London and the Leiston site, offering hands-on management of subcontract packages and cost control to deliver a high-profile project.

We value a BSc/MSc in Quantity Surveying with experience in building or civil engineering, strong measurement/valuations skills, and the ability to build relationships with project teams and clients.

Qualifications

  • BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying (or equivalent).
  • Experience in commercial/quantity surveying within building, civil engineering or construction.
  • Confidence in measurement, valuations, cost forecasting, variations and managing subcontract packages.

Responsibilities

  • Manage subcontract packages from order to monthly site valuations, variations and final accounts.
  • Prepare accurate cost forecasts and contribute to monthly project forecast.
  • Measure, record and value work per project rules and requirements.
  • Support procurement by documenting requirements and managing commercial steps for suppliers.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, subcontractors and client surveying teams on valuations and payments.
  • Use commercial systems to collate cost/value data and support cost reconciliation.

About the role

We are looking for a commercially focused Quantity Surveyor to join our Rail Team working on our Sizewell C project!

This is an excellent opportunity for a QS with solid building or civil engineering experience to play a hands-on role in managing subcontract packages, driving value, supporting cost control and helping deliver a high-profile project to the standards our customers expect.

The role will be split between London and the site office in Leiston, Suffolk.

What you'll be doing
  • Manage subcontract packages from order completion through to monthly site valuations, variations and final account activity.
  • Prepare accurate cost forecasts and contribute to the overall project forecast each month.
  • Measure, record and value work in line with relevant rules, procedures and project requirements
  • Support procurement activity by gathering information, documenting requirements and managing the commercial steps needed to appoint and manage the supply chain.
  • Work closely with internal teams, subcontractors and the client’s surveying team on valuations, variations, payments and commercial reporting.
  • Use commercial systems to collate cost and value information, support cost reconciliation and maintain strong financial control.
  • Identify opportunities to minimise cost, enhance value for money and maintain the required quality standards.
Who we're looking for
  • A BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience in a commercial or quantity surveying role within building, civil engineering or construction.
  • Confidence in measurement, valuations, cost forecasting, variations and working with subcontract packages.
  • Good knowledge of drawings, specifications, bills of quantities and schedules of rates.
  • A structured, analytical approach with strong attention to detail.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with project teams, subcontractors, stakeholders and customers.
  • Chartered status, or working towards professional membership of RICS, ICES or CIOB, would be highly desirable.
