Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is seeking a Quantity Surveyor with experience in managing all costs for building and civil engineering projects. You will support senior commercial members, procure and manage supply chain, and strive to minimise costs while maintaining quality for customers.

The role involves overseeing subcontract packages, monthly valuations, and cost forecasting, with opportunities to mentor trainee surveyors and develop commercial governance practices.

Qualifications

  • BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying or experience equivalent
  • Rail or Civil Engineering industry experience
  • NEC Contracts experience desirable

Responsibilities

  • Manage subcontract packages from order completion, through monthly valuations and day-to-day variations.
  • Provide detailed trade forecasts each month for input into project forecast.
  • Assist with purchase order placement, payments, and liaison with client surveyor teams for valuations/variations.
  • Develop trainees and apprentices within the team.
  • Record and document information including registration of interest and procurement requirements.

About the role

A Quantity Surveyor has experience in managing all costs relating to building and civil engineering projects. They will be supporting other more senior members of the commercial team in delivering the varied commercial duties as well as being responsible for procuring and managing our supply chain. They actively seek to minimise the costs of a project and enhance value for money, while
still achieving the required standards and quality for our Customers. Typically, a QS will be chartered or in the final stages of achieving professional membership of the RICS, ICES or CIOB and will be a peer role model for those less experienced members of the commercial team.


What you'll be doing

Duties will include management of subcontract packages from order completion, through the monthly valuations and day to day management of variations.


In addition, they will be expected to provide detailed trade forecasts each
months of costs for input into the overall project forecast.


Internal activities such as purchase order placement, processing of payments and liaison with the client's surveyor team for valuations and variations.


There will also be the opportunity to manage and develop trainee and apprentice Quantity Surveyors.


Has a good knowledge of and adheres to the Company's GMCEs, BMS and other governance
Orders information and systematically checks data


Measure, record & value work unsupervised in accordance with appropriate rules and procedures


Measure & interpret specifications & drawings


Build up estimates from first principle including net and gross estimates


Translate measurement from drawings and Specifications and prepare Bills of Quantities and Schedules of rates


Review weekly, monthly, section programmes of works


Plan commercial activities to meet requirements of programmes


Have an understanding of delay and disruption programmes


Use the company’s ERP System (Oracle R12)


Preparation of Cost reconciliation statements


Collect information required to specify procurement requirements


Record and document information including registration of interest


Understand the steps / documentation required


Commercial Management


Undertakes customer and stakeholder management for their area of responsibility


Collation of cost and value information


Measurement of works and agreements with subcontractors


Development, Recruitment and Retention


Maintain a Personal Development Plan


Supports the development of others


Working towards professional membership from the RICS, ICES or CIOB


Who we're looking for

The following qualifications are essential:



  • BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying or experience equivalent

  • Ideally Rail or Civil Engineering industry experience


The following qualities/experience are desirable:



  • Previous Commercial Work experience

  • Industry knowledge

  • Infrastructure preferred

  • NEC Contracts preferred
