Job summary

Balfour Beatty Rail is seeking an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support cost control, contract performance and reporting on a rail project. You’ll work with the commercial team to manage project costs, subcontract accounts and valuations.

You’ll contribute to cost forecasting, cash flow, change control and monthly reporting, while upholding safety and the Zero Harm ethos. This is a development-focused role with a collaborative team.

Qualifications

  • Valid CSCS card required.
  • Understanding of cost control, valuations and contract administration.
  • Strong numeracy and written communication.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and project administration.

Responsibilities

  • Support the commercial strategy to deliver margins and financial performance.
  • Maintain accurate cost reporting, commitments and budget movements.
  • Assist with cost forecasts, final value projections and monthly cost/value reporting.
  • Monitor cash flow and valuation plans; ensure timely submissions.
  • Identify, value and progress contract variations; support claims records.
  • Assist with subcontract tendering, procurement and administration.
  • Ensure subcontract accounts align with terms and conditions.
  • Collaborate with customers, subcontractors and internal teams for timely sharing of commercial information.
  • Support project reviews and continuous improvement of commercial processes.
  • Uphold safety, quality, sustainability and Zero Harm in all tasks.

Balfour Beatty Rail are looking for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our Commercial team and support the effective management of project costs, subcontract accounts, valuations and reporting.

This is a great opportunity for someone with quantity surveying experience who wants to develop their commercial capability, take on meaningful project responsibility and progress within a collaborative, safety-focused environment!

What you'll be doing

As Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you’ll help provide commercial and contractual support across a specified project or portfolio of projects. Working closely with project management and commercial colleagues, you’ll contribute to cost forecasting, cash flow management, procurement, subcontract administration, change control and monthly reporting.

  • Supporting the commercial strategy for projects to help deliver required margins and strong financial performance.
  • Maintaining accurate cost reporting, highlighting commitments, budget movements and deviations.
  • Assisting with cost forecasts, final value projections and monthly cost and value reporting.
  • Monitoring cash flow and valuation plans, ensuring applications are prepared accurately and submitted on time.
  • Identifying, valuing and progressing contract variations and supporting effective records for claims.
  • Supporting subcontract tendering, selection, procurement and administration.
  • Helping ensure subcontract accounts are managed in line with agreed terms and conditions.
  • Working closely with customers, subcontractors and internal teams to ensure key commercial information is shared on time.
  • Supporting project reviews, reporting and continuous improvement across commercial processes.
  • Keeping safety, quality, sustainability and Zero Harm at the heart of everything you do.
Who we're looking for
  • Previous experience in quantity surveying, ideally within a relevant construction, infrastructure or project-based environment.
  • A valid CSCS card.
  • Working knowledge of construction and contract law, contract conditions, tendering and procurement processes.
  • An understanding of commercial management principles, cost control, valuations, variations and subcontract administration.
  • Good numeracy, written communication, administration, IT and Microsoft Office skills.
  • The ability to work well as part of a team and use your own initiative.
  • Strong organisation skills, attention to detail and the ability to work to deadlines.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body, or progress towards a qualification such as InstCES or RICS, would be desirable.
