Job description

About the role

Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor to join our Regional Building team in the West Midlands, supporting the delivery of the N1N2 Project in Birmingham. This is an exciting opportunity to take a lead commercial role on a major Buildings and Infrastructure scheme delivered under an NEC contract, driving commercial strategy, performance and governance while ensuring the highest standards of quality, value and risk management.

We are looking for a commercially astute leader with a proven track record of managing commercial teams, overseeing project finances and maximising value throughout the project lifecycle. Whether your background is in Building, MEP, or a combination of both, you will bring the expertise needed to lead complex commercial functions, manage contractual risk, optimise project outcomes and support the successful delivery of large-scale construction projects.

As a senior leader within the project team, you will provide direction and mentorship to Quantity Surveyors and Senior Quantity Surveyors, fostering professional development and helping shape the next generation of commercial talent. You'll work closely with operational and project leadership teams to influence key business decisions and ensure the achievement of both project and regional business objectives. Ideally, you'll be professionally qualified, holding or working towards Chartership with RICS, CIOB or ICES, and demonstrate a strong commitment to continuous professional development and commercial excellence within one of the UK's leading infrastructure and construction businesses.

What you'll be doing
  • Lead and manage the commercial function on the N1N2 project, ensuring robust cost control, risk management and commercial performance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and support to a team of Quantity Surveyors, driving high standards of commercial delivery and professional development.
  • Act as a key member of the project leadership team, providing commercial insight and influencing strategic decision-making across the project.
  • Oversee the administration of the NEC contract, managing change, compensation events, commercial risks and contractual obligations.
  • Lead procurement and supply chain management activities, ensuring best value is achieved while maintaining strong collaborative relationships.
  • Take ownership of financial reporting, forecasting, cost management and commercial governance, providing accurate and timely information to senior stakeholders.
  • Identify, assess and mitigate commercial risks and opportunities, protecting and enhancing Balfour Beatty's commercial position.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors and key stakeholders, acting as the project's commercial lead.
  • Mentor and develop commercial team members, supporting progression towards professional qualifications and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Champion best practice, maintain compliance with Balfour Beatty processes and contribute to the successful delivery of a major Buildings and Infrastructure project in the West Midlands.
Who we're looking for
  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying (BSc, MSc or equivalent) and ideally a Chartered Member of RICS, CIOB or ICES.
  • Proven experience in a Managing Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor capacity on large-scale Building, Infrastructure or MEP projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts, with experience leading commercial activities from procurement through to final account.
  • Demonstrable experience managing and developing commercial teams, providing leadership, coaching and support to both qualified and developing surveyors.
  • Highly commercial with a strong track record in cost management, risk mitigation, forecasting, financial reporting and supply chain management.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence project and business leaders.
  • Experienced in leading commercial strategy and providing expert guidance to project leadership teams on complex commercial matters.
  • Holder of a CSCS Professional Qualified Person Card (or able to obtain one).
  • Passionate about developing others, acting as a mentor and role model to support colleagues on their journey towards professional qualification and chartership.
  • Committed to maintaining Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and driving best practice across the commercial function.
