The British Geological Survey is seeking a Public Engagement and Events Coordinator to enhance community engagement and promote public understanding of geoscience. This full-time role involves coordinating events, developing learning resources, and supporting the wider public engagement strategy. Grade: UKRI Pay Band C
Salary: £29,923 per annum

Contract Type: 1 year fixed term appointment
Full-time – 37 hours a week (Hybrid working options are available with regular on-site attendance and some remote working, in line with the BGS policy)

Reporting to the Public Engagement Co-ordinator (London) and working alongside the Public Engagement Co-ordinator in Keyworth and the wider communications and engagement team, this role supports the implementation of PE projects across BGS, aligning with its strategic focus as part of the new BGS strategy.
The role will lead the development of our public engagement initiatives at our head office in Keyworth, engaging local communities and increasing awareness of BGS and its work. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and evaluating BGS’s presence at events, developing learning resources, and delivering school and teacher initiatives. It also involves supporting the wider public engagement team in delivering the BGS Public Engagement Strategy.
This role is ideal for someone aspiring to develop a career in science communication and public engagement. Suitable backgrounds include geoscience, events management, or other relevant fields. The role requires active engagement with communities, organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Flexibility to travel and work outside regular hours is essential.
You should be outgoing, organized, proactive, and able to communicate effectively both in writing and face-to-face. Experience in event coordination, science communication, or community engagement is desirable. A valid UK driving license and ability to drive a van are also preferred.
The British Geological Survey (BGS) is a leading geoscience research center, part of UKRI, dedicated to advising on subsurface science and environmental issues globally. It employs approximately 650 staff across two main sites and collaborates with numerous organizations and universities.
