Job summary

SSE plc is seeking a Principal Engineer - Building Services to define technical policy and support future-ready projects across the transmission network in Scotland. The role demands Chartered status and expert mechanical services experience in substations or data centres.

You will review specifications, approve test plans, and provide technical consultancy across SSEN Transmission. The position offers a Flexible First working arrangement and a competitive package.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, with Chartered status.
• Expert-level experience in design, specification, construction, operation and maintenance of mechanical services in data centres, substations or industrial environments.
• Knowledge of standards (National Grid, ENA, British/European specs).
• Experience managing engineering, asset management, contractors and other partners.
• Data-led design validation for transmission substation building requirements; related experience advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Write, maintain and own mechanical services specifications for substations and interfaces.
• Review and update specifications based on lessons learned and changes in standards.
• Approve tests, witness tests and generate Technical Authority reports.
• Provide input to design reviews and ensure fit-for-purpose project proposals.
• Share specialist knowledge and represent SSEN Transmission at industry events and working groups.
