Job summary

Royal Mail in Port Ellen is seeking a Postie to deliver letters and parcels across Isle of Islay. The role is 37 hours per week on a rotating schedule, including weekends, and you will drive a Royal Mail van and deliver on foot in your local area.

You will work outdoors in all weather, stay active, and build relationships with customers. Full training, a uniform, and pension and wellbeing support are provided. This fixed-term contract lasts six months with overtime paid.

Qualifications

• Must have a full UK manual driving licence with up to 6 penalty points.
• Physically fit for long walks, climbing stairs/hills, and lifting 10kg+ mailbags.
• Reliable and self-motivated with good organisation.

Job type: Fixed Term contract (6 months)

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.

Working hours: 37:00 hours per week – working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday – 09:30/17:30*

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions
• Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
