Job summary

Royal Mail in South Shields is hiring a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) for 27.5 hours per week across 5 days in 7, with shifts 09:00-16:00 or 15:30-21:00. This fixed-term 6-month contract will deliver letters and parcels, working in the community with a Royal Mail van and on foot in your local area.

You’ll be trained, provided a uniform and a safety-first operating environment, with paid overtime where applicable and a supportive team. Weekend work is required on a rotating schedule.

Qualifications

• A full manual UK driving licence (max 6 penalty points)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily
• Physically fit and able to walk long distances, climb stairs/hills, and lift/carry 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently

Salary: £13.68 per hour (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.

Working hours: 27.5 hours per week – working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday – 09:00 - 16:00/15:30 - 21:00

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily

• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated

• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
