Job summary

Royal Mail is hiring a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) in Portsmouth to deliver letters and parcels on a rotating shift. The role is fixed term for 6 months, part of a 35-hour week, with weekend work and a 08:30–15:30/12:30–19:30 schedule.

You’ll join a loyal team serving the Portsmouth area and communities you live in. Full training and a uniform are provided, with chances for overtime and career development.

Qualifications

• Must hold a full manual UK driving licence (max 6 penalty points)
• Able to drive a Royal Mail van daily and pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and able to walk long distances and lift 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated in a busy, outdoor role

Location: Portsmouth Delivery Office, PO3 5GG

Job type: Fixed Term contract (6 months)

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.

Working hours: 35:00 hours per week - working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday - 08:30 - 15:30/12:30 - 19:30 Sundays*

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily

• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
