Job summary

Royal Mail in Basingstoke is looking for a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) on a fixed-term contract for 6 months. You will sort mail, deliver by van and on foot, and build relationships with customers on your route. The role is physically demanding, outdoors, and involves weekend work on a rotating schedule.

You will receive full training, a uniform, and a standard Royal Mail van. A full UK manual driving licence is required and you must be able to pass a driving assessment.

Location: Basingstoke Delivery Office, RG24 9AA

Job type: Fixed Term contract (6 months)

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.

Working hours: 35:00 hours per week – working (5) days in 7 across Monday - Sunday – 08:20/16:00 or 07:50/15:30*

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions
• Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
