Job summary

Royal Mail Group in Melksham is seeking a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) for a fixed-term 6-month contract. You will sort letters and parcels at the delivery office and deliver by van and on foot in your local area, on a rotating shift including weekends.

The role requires a full manual UK driving licence, physical fitness to walk long distances, and the ability to work outdoors in all weather. You’ll join a trusted network delivering letters, parcels, and important moments to the community,

Qualifications

Job description

Location: Melksham Delivery Office, SN12 6ZZ

Job type: Fixed Term contract (6 months)

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available. Working hours: 30:00 hours per week - working (5) days in 7 across Monday - Sunday - 06:00 - 12:00 or 12:00 - 18:00*

Flexibility is required to work up to 15:00 on the morning shift and 18:00 on the afternoon shift

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

You’ll be required to work every other Sunday at Melksham Delivery Office

What to expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions
• Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About you

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
