Job summary

Royal Mail Ashington Delivery Office is seeking a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) on a fixed-term contract for 6 months. You will work 30 hours per week, 15:00–21:00, across five days in seven, delivering letters and parcels by van and on foot in Ashington.

You will be outdoors in all weathers, build relationships with customers, and follow a rotating shift with full training provided. This role requires a full UK driving licence, reliability, and good organisational skills.

Qualifications

• Must have a full manual UK driving licence with up to 6 penalty points.
• Ability to pass a driving assessment for Royal Mail van driving.
• Physically fit to walk long distances and lift mailbags.
• Customer-focused and reliable with good time management.

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.

Working hours: 30.00 hours per week – working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday – 15:00/21:00*

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions
• Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
