Job summary

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester is seeking a Portering Team Leader to supervise portering staff, manage daily operations and uphold service standards in a busy hospital environment.

You will deputise for the Head Porter out-of-hours, assist with rotas, training, and incident response, ensuring patient care remains uninterrupted and staff are supported.

The role requires excellent customer service, flexibility, and a proactive approach to risk and safety within the NHS trust.

Qualifications

• Proven supervisory experience leading teams in a busy hospital environment.
• Experience dealing with vulnerable patients in a high-pressure setting.
• Ability to maintain excellent Customer Service standards in demanding situations.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Head Porter in all aspects of the provision of the portering service.
• Deputise for the head porter out-of-hours and as required.
• Carry out all portering tasks and assist with administrative tasks with the head porter.
• Assist with the production of weekly rotas for all staff; allocate and instruct staff daily.
• Liaise with other managers to resolve problems quickly to minimise disruption to patient services.
• Monitor service provision during shifts, especially late afternoons and early evenings.
• Monitor use of Teletracking software and escalate concerns as needed.
• Develop, maintain and review staff training records; book staff on training courses.
• Ensure training is carried out and recorded per trust policy, including inductions and new starters.
• Carry out H+S risk assessments and ensure they are reviewed and disseminated to staff.
• Ensure on-duty staff wear uniforms, footwear and ID; process any uniform issues.
• Undertake advanced medical gas proficiency training with staff and porters.
• Coordinate with department heads during TeleTracking outages and reallocate staff as required.
• Respond to issues or complaints during work hours and escalate when necessary.
• Address staff concerns informally before escalating to formal action.
• Respond to incidents or emergencies to maintain essential services; prioritise by patient need.
• Follow Trust policies and ensure staff work within guidance.
• Operate radios, touch screens and computers; report faults and manage related software.
• Conduct return-to-work interviews after unplanned absences.
• Raise DATIX reports for incidents and act on them as required.
