Job summary

Teaching Personnel is seeking a dedicated Phonics Teaching Assistant to join our committed team in Burnley. You will support early reading and decoding skills, working closely with teachers to deliver high-quality phonics sessions.

The role involves delivering phonics interventions to individuals and small groups, monitoring progress, and helping pupils develop confidence and a lifelong love of reading. A TA qualification is desirable.

Qualifications

Job description

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Phonics Teaching Assistant to join our committed team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children in developing their early reading skills and ensuring every child has the foundations they need to become confident, successful learners.

As a Phonics Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers to deliver high-quality phonics support, helping pupils make strong progress and develop a lifelong love of reading.

Location: Burnley
Salary: £14.25 - £15.50 per hour
Contract Type: Full-time 8.30am – 3.30pm
Start Date: 2nd November 2026 or ASAP

You will support the delivery of daily phonics sessions, provide targeted interventions, and work with individual pupils and small groups to develop their phonics knowledge, reading fluency, and confidence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the delivery of high-quality phonics teaching across the school.
  • Deliver phonics interventions to individuals and small groups.
  • Help pupils develop phonemic awareness, blending, segmenting, and decoding skills.
  • Support children who require additional help to reach age-related expectations.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, providing feedback to teachers.
  • Assist in preparing engaging phonics resources and activities.
  • Promote a positive attitude towards reading and learning.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SEND staff, and parents to support pupil achievement.
  • Contribute to creating a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.
About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working with primary-aged children, ideally in EYFS or Key Stage 1.
  • Has a strong understanding of phonics and early reading development.
  • Is familiar with recognised phonics programmes such as Little Wandle, Read Write Inc., or similar (desirable).
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Is patient, enthusiastic, and committed to helping children succeed.
  • Can motivate and inspire young learners.
  • Works effectively as part of a team.
  • Holds a Teaching Assistant qualification or relevant experience (desirable).
