St John Ambulance works at the heart of communities, supporting and enabling them to access and receive physical and mental health first aid. We do this through developing and providing effective community response and outreach services (e.g. Ambulance response, Falls response and Night Time Economy) and using our longstanding expertise to empower people with vital clinical skills and the confidence to use them (e.g. our Volunteers and Community Advocates, NHS Cadets and Young Responders programmes). There is also a buoyant social enterprise network which delivers first aid training and supplies medical consumables to businesses and consumers.

Job Summary

The Philanthropy Manager role sits within the Philanthropy and Partnerships Team comprising Trusts and Statutory, Philanthropy and Corporate Partnerships.

This role reports to the Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships with the overall responsibility of the Philanthropy Team (currently two staff). With a current income target of almost £700k with the aim to grow to over £1m in 2025, this is an exciting opportunity to lead and manage an ambitious team fundraising across the UK and USA.

This position will be crucial to the success of a developing Philanthropy and Partnerships team and will be responsible for leading, developing and ensuring the implementation of the Philanthropy programme to meet ambitious growth targets for the future of St John.

The successful candidate will lead and manage our work with influential philanthropists and stakeholders as well as ensuring we have an outstanding Philanthropy programme, inspiring donors and prospects to invest for the long term in the invaluable work of St John, building resilient communities and empowering the next generation of young people.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience operating and driving philanthropic income growth at a senior level
  • Significant experience of identifying and cultivating cold prospects
  • Significant experience and a proven track record of cultivating and stewarding six and seven figure relationships
  • Experience of working closely with senior individuals internally and externally such as Directors, DEO, Chair, senior volunteers, Patrons and Trustees
  • Experience of leading, inspiring and motivating fundraisers, supporting them in their development to drive a culture of excellence

About the Role

  • Accountable for the leadership and overall management of the Philanthropy team, objectives and targets as well as personally managing a portfolio of donors giving at a transformational level
  • Responsible for setting, monitoring and reviewing philanthropy income and expenditure budget as well as creating the team’s annual and five-year plans alongside the Head of Partnerships and Philanthropy.
  • Oversee the development and management of our Development Board, ensuring significant income growth and transformational gifts.
  • Lead and manage the development of complex philanthropic proposals, working with staff across all departments.
  • Grow the UK and International pipeline, working closely with the Prospect Researcher to identify and research new prospective funders and planning advanced strategies to increase major gifts from wealthy prospects.
  • Embed strong stewardship and prospecting approaches to maximise opportunities and support the team to develop their portfolios.
