The Role

As a SEND HLTA, you will play an important role in supporting pupils both academically and therapeutically, helping them to engage with learning, develop independence and achieve their potential.

  • Supporting and delivering learning activities for pupils aged 9-17.
  • Working with individuals and small groups, adapting learning to meet individual needs.
  • Providing targeted support for pupils with autism, ADHD, attachment and trauma-related needs.
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils and acting as a consistent and supportive adult.
  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation, social communication and behaviour.
  • Implementing individual support plans and contributing to pupil reviews.
  • Working closely with teachers, SEND staff, pastoral teams and other professionals.
  • Taking responsibility for lessons or learning activities when required.
  • Promoting independence, resilience, confidence and positive self-esteem.
  • Supporting pupils to develop the skills they need both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Maintaining high expectations while providing a calm, predictable and nurturing environment.
  • Contributing to a positive school culture where every pupil feels valued and understood.
About You
  • An experienced HLTA, Teaching Assistant or experienced SEND practitioner.
  • Confident supporting children and young people with additional needs.
  • Experienced in working with autism and/or ADHD.
  • Knowledgeable about attachment, trauma and emotional regulation.
  • Calm, patient and consistent, particularly when supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour.
  • Skilled at developing strong professional relationships with young people.
  • Able to adapt their communication and teaching approach to meet individual needs.
  • Resilient, reflective and able to remain positive in challenging situations.
  • A strong team player who communicates effectively with colleagues and families.
  • Passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning and reach their potential.
