Position Summary

The neonatal nurse practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse that helps with all aspects of patient care, including diagnosis, treatments, and consultations in the NICU.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of patients through interviews, health history, physical examinations, and diagnostic studies.
  • Recognizes deviations from normal in physical assessments and works collaboratively to formulate treatment plans.
  • Implements appropriate management based on laboratory results, physical assessments, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and admission and discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.
  • Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of patients.
  • Provides care appropriate to the age of the patients served, demonstrating necessary knowledge and skills.
  • Creates a compassionate and therapeutic environment for patients and their families.
  • Maintains awareness of legal issues and patients’ rights.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and resolves patient care issues to improve patient outcomes.
  • Documents all patient interactions accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintains provision of preventive health services.
  • Participates in daily multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Performs detailed history and physical examinations, and documents inpatient H&P and discharge summaries (must be reviewed and countersigned by supervising medical staff within 24 hours; cannot substitute physician H&P).
  • Writes or dictates reports and progress notes appropriately in the medical record.
  • Triages patients effectively.
  • Shares clinical expertise with professional and supportive personnel, collaborating with other healthcare disciplines to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
  • Ensures compliance with all organizational policies and procedures.

Other Related Functions

  • Acts as a role model and resource for staff.
  • Participates in reviewing and revising policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Establishes relationships with other health-related professionals within the community.
  • Communicates effectively in both verbal and written forms with diverse populations, including physicians, staff, patients, and families.
Qualifications

Education/Training

MN, MSN, DNP, PhD, or DNS degree in nursing required.

Licensure/Certification

  • ARNP license in the state.
  • After July 1, 2006, applicants are required to have national advanced certification from an approved nursing specialty board.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Additional Preferences

At least one year of NP NICU experience required.
