Job summary

Greater Preston Primary Care Network is recruiting a permanent part-time phlebotomist (25 hours/week) to collect blood samples across Preston practices. The role requires venepuncture competency, reliable travel between sites, and adherence to infection control and patient safety protocols.

You will label samples, record data accurately and escalate complex cases to clinicians while supporting routine training and competency updates within the network.

Qualifications

• Phlebotomy/venepuncture training with evidence of practical competency.
• Strong infection prevention and patient safety knowledge.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a patient-centered approach.
• Ability to travel reliably between GP practice locations and use IT systems.

Responsibilities

• Explain procedures, obtain consent, and ensure patient comfort during blood collection.
• Verify patient identity against the GP/nurse test request before sampling.
• Perform venepuncture safely and competently according to training and guidelines.
• Label samples correctly and dispatch to laboratories via ICE or appropriate system.
• Record collections in patient records, keeping information confidential.
• Report issues, escalate difficult cases, and raise concerns to the clinical team.
• Follow infection control and safe waste procedures, keep areas clean.
• Maintain stock of phlebotomy equipment and prepare clinical areas.
• Take basic vitals such as blood pressure and escalate abnormal findings.
• Communicate clearly with patients, clinicians, admin staff, and the PCN team.
