Job summary

The Nottingham Building Society is seeking a Head of Mortgage Underwriting at Head Office in Nottingham. This permanent role is hybrid, with at least two days on site weekly, and carries a competitive salary plus car allowance.

You will lead origination and underwriting strategy across residential, buy-to-let and specialist lending, while developing a high-performing team and ensuring compliant risk management.

Qualifications

• Extensive mortgage origination, underwriting and portfolio management experience.
• Strong regulatory knowledge across MCOB and FCA requirements.
• Proven leadership of high-performing operational teams.
• Ability to interpret MI, KPIs and performance data to spot trends.
• Experience delivering change, transformation and continuous improvement.
• Outstanding stakeholder management and credibility with senior leaders.
• Excellent communication and decision-making under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Shape and deliver the Mortgage Origination and Underwriting strategy.
• Lead, motivate and develop high-performing teams in a customer/intermediary-focused culture.
• Maintain robust underwriting standards, ensuring prudent, compliant lending decisions.
• Drive operational efficiency and service excellence across mortgage journeys.
• Use data and feedback to identify trends, manage risks and improve outcomes.
• Lead change initiatives and transformation programmes within the function.
• Ensure regulatory compliance, risk management and governance controls.
• Build strong relationships with brokers, solicitors, valuation partners and risk/compliance teams.
• Oversee third-party suppliers and outsourced services to maintain service quality.
• Champion operational resilience and business continuity in a changing environment.
