Job summary

The Nottingham Building Society is recruiting a Head of Mortgage Underwriting at Head Office in Nottingham. This hybrid role (minimum 2 days per week) leads the mortgage origination and underwriting strategy to support growth and customer outcomes.

You will build and coach high-performing teams, ensure prudent underwriting standards, manage risks, and drive continuous improvement across mortgage journeys, while maintaining strong governance and stakeholder relationships.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience across mortgage origination, underwriting and portfolio management.
• Strong regulatory knowledge including MCOB, FCA requirements and financial crime controls.
• Proven experience leading high-performing operational teams and coaching colleagues to reach potential.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Shape and deliver the Mortgage Origination and Underwriting strategy.
• Lead, motivate and develop high-performing teams with a customer-focused culture.
• Maintain robust underwriting standards, prudent lending and governance.
• Drive operational efficiency across mortgage journeys and processes.
• Use data, feedback and performance insights to identify trends and risks.
• Lead change initiatives and transformation programmes to embed new ways of working.
• Ensure regulatory compliance and effective risk management.
• Build strong relationships with brokers, solicitors, valuation partners and internal teams.
• Oversee third-party suppliers and outsourced services to maintain service delivery.
• Champion operational resilience and business continuity.
