Job summary

European Bioinformatics Institute in Hinxton is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design, develop and support state-of-the-art scientific instruments within the Scientific Instrumentation Workshops. You will create production-ready mechanical designs, coordinate component manufacture and support delivery of instrumentation.

You will lead design reviews, collaborate with researchers and technicians, and ensure high-quality outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Strong experience with CAD software (ideally Solidworks) for design and simulation.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, assembling and testing prototype instruments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing methods and material selection.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for advanced scientific instrumentation.
  • Analyse mechanical performance using modelling and simulation tools to meet requirements.
  • Lead mechanical design reviews with researchers and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate manufacture with workshops and external suppliers.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers for components.
  • Test assemblies for compliance with design specs and performance.
