Job summary

Nottingham College is seeking an Electrical and Electronic Engineering Lecturer to teach across FE and HE levels, from Level 1 through Level 5, and to support learners progressing toward bachelor’s degree studies.

The role involves practical electronics workshop delivery and rigorous classroom teaching, with opportunities to integrate CAD and MATLAB tools and advise on engineering mathematics and applied science.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Recognised teaching qualification such as a PGCE or Cert Ed, or to be achieved within a defined timeframe.
  • Experience delivering Electrical/Electronic Engineering across FE and HE levels.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver FE and HE engineering provision from Level 1 to Level 5, and support progression to bachelor’s degree-level study.
  • Combine practical electronics workshop teaching with analytical classroom instruction.

At Nottingham College, we are seeking a highly capable and versatile Electrical and Electronic Engineering Lecturer who can deliver across FE and HE engineering provision, from Level 1 through to Level 5, with the ability to support learners progressing towards bachelor’s degree-level study.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineering practitioner or lecturer who is confident delivering both practical electronics workshop-based learning and analytically rigorous classroom teaching.

You will play a key role in supporting learners at every stage of their engineering journey, from foundation learners developing core technical skills to higher-level students studying advanced engineering principles, electronic systems, programming and applied mathematics .

About the role

We are looking for an engineer with strong knowledge and practical experience in electrical and electronic engineering, with the ability to teach the theory and application of engineering principles across a range of levels.

The successful candidate will be confident delivering subjects linked to:

  • Electrical and electronic principles
  • Analogue and digital electronics
  • Programming for engineers
  • MATLAB and simulation-based problem solving
  • Practical electronics workshop skills
  • Control systems and automation
  • Engineering mathematics and applied science

The ability to support CAD or engineering design would be highly advantageous.

You will deliver across FE and HE provision, supporting programmes including:

  • Level 1 and Level 2 Engineering
  • Level 3 BTEC and T Level Engineering
  • Higher-level learners progressing towards bachelor’s degree-level study

The successful candidate will combine strong subject knowledge with the adaptability, learner focus and high expectations required within an FE and HE environment .

What you will teach

Electrical and Electronic Engineering

You will be expected to deliver a range of electrical and electronic engineering topics, including:

  • Electrical science and circuit theory
  • AC and DC circuits
  • Electronic principles and systems
  • Digital electronics
  • Sensors, actuators and transducers
  • Electrical machines and power systems
  • Control systems and automation
  • PLCs, embedded systems and microcontrollers
  • Fault finding, testing and measurement
  • Practical electronics workshop activities

Programming and Engineering Software

You should be confident supporting learners with programming and engineering software used within electrical and electronic engineering. This may include:

  • MATLAB for engineering analysis, modelling and simulation
  • Programming concepts and problem solving
  • Use of programming languages relevant to engineering applications
  • Simulation of circuits, control systems or electronic systems
  • Data analysis and technical computation
  • Application of software to solve engineering problems

Experience with additional programming languages such as Python, C, C++, Arduino or similar would be beneficial.

Engineering Principles, Mathematics and Science

You will also support the delivery of core underpinning engineering knowledge, including:

  • Engineering principles
  • Applied mathematics for engineers
  • Algebra, trigonometry and calculus
  • Applied physics and engineering science
  • Analytical problem-solving
  • Interpretation of technical data and calculations

You must be confident teaching engineering principles, electronic theory, applied mathematics and engineering systems to higher-level learners, while also supporting foundation learners in developing confidence and core technical skills.

Design and CAD

Although the main focus of the role is electrical and electronic engineering, knowledge of CAD would be highly desirable. This may include Engineering drawing and interpretation, 2D or 3D CAD, Electrical or electronic design documentation, Schematic design and supporting learners with design-based project work

Who we’re looking for

We are particularly interested in applicants who:

  • Have a degree, Level 6 or above, in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, Control Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Have strong underpinning knowledge of electrical and electronic principles
  • Can confidently teach engineering systems, electronic theory and engineering principles
  • Are competent in programming and able to support learners using MATLAB
  • Have experience with relevant programming languages used in engineering
  • Are confident working in an electronics workshop environment
  • Can support practical activities including circuit building, testing, soldering, measurement and fault finding
  • Can deliver analytical and technical content up to Level 5, with the confidence to support learners progressing towards bachelor’s degree-level study
  • Have strong knowledge of engineering mathematics and applied physics
  • Have experience working with diverse FE and/or HE learners
  • Maintain high expectations around attendance, behaviour, safety and academic standards
  • Are organised, adaptable and student-focused

A recognised teaching qualification, such as a PGCE or Cert Ed, is essential or must be achieved within a specified timeframe.
