Job summary

Newham College London is seeking an Learning Support Assistant to assist in delivering the curriculum and support learners individually or in small groups. The role includes keeping progress records, aiding with personal care, and contributing to safeguarding and welfare of learners.

You will support learners’ physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development, assist with behaviour management, supervise on arrival and during breaks, and help with off-site visits when required.

Responsibilities

• Assist in delivering the curriculum by supporting learners individually or in small groups and provide regular feedback to teachers and learners about progress and attainment.
• Keep records of support provided as directed by the SEND management team.
• Respond to requests from learners for support to maximise skills, abilities, potential and independence.
• Support the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of learners, including contributing ideas to support planning.
• Assist with behaviour management in and out of the classroom with support from the teaching team and SEND management team.
• Supervise learners on arrival, at lunch and breaks and ensure they leave the premises safely at day end.
• Provide personal care support in line with college policy (toileting, break times, medication administration).
• Supervise and support community-based learning and educational visits as required.
• Assist those with mobility problems to navigate the building and participate in off-site visits safely.
• Assist learners to use canteen, LRC and other resource areas.
• Create visual displays to facilitate a relevant physical learning environment.
• Create, adapt and use resources and strategies to meet learners' needs including e-resources.
• Contact home or external agencies as directed by managers or teaching staff.
• Support learners socially through encouragement, listening and talking.
• Attend LSA, course, directorate and college-wide meetings and CPD sessions.
• Follow risk assessments and emergency procedures in line with college policy.
