Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment.

Learning Support Assistant

Location: Wallsend, North Tyneside (NE28)
Salary: From £90 per day
Contract: Day-to-Day, Short-Term & Long-Term Opportunities

GSL Education is currently recruiting a dedicated and resilient Learning Support Assistant to work within a SEMH provision in Wallsend, NE28.

The provision supports children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including pupils who may display challenging behaviour or experience barriers to engaging successfully with education.

This role is ideal for someone who is patient, confident and passionate about making a positive difference. Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils will be a key part of the position.

The Role

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will:

  • Support pupils with SEMH needs within the classroom.
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support depending on individual pupil needs.
  • Help pupils engage with lessons and overcome barriers to learning.
  • Support pupils with their social and emotional development.
  • Build positive and consistent relationships with young people.
  • Use appropriate strategies to support pupils with challenging behaviour and emotional regulation.
  • Encourage positive behaviour, independence and confidence.
  • Work closely with teachers, SEN staff and other professionals.
  • Help maintain a safe, structured and supportive learning environment.
  • Follow safeguarding, behaviour and wellbeing policies at all times.
What We're Looking For

We would particularly like to hear from candidates with experience in:

  • SEMH or SEND settings.
  • Alternative provisions or specialist schools.
  • Behaviour support or mentoring.
  • Youth work.
  • Residential or children's care.
  • Sports coaching or community-based work.
  • Supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour.

You will need to be patient, resilient and confident, with the ability to remain calm and professional when faced with challenging situations.

Relevant qualifications are desirable; however, strong practical experience working with children or young people will also be considered.
