Job summary

Masterclass Education is seeking a Learning Support Assistant to join our partner SEN schools in Portsmouth. You will support pupils aged 3–19 with a range of needs, helping them access learning and grow confidence.

The role offers weekly PAYE pay, a proactive team, and opportunities for CPD via the MCE Learning Portal. Training in Makaton/PECS is available, with full training and DBS support provided.

Qualifications

  • Experience with children with additional needs is desirable.
  • Patience, empathy and resilience are essential.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to obtain enhanced DBS.

Responsibilities

  • Support pupils aged 3–19 with a range of needs.
  • Collaborate with teachers and therapists to support learning.
  • Deliver engaging, differentiated activities aligned to IEPs.
  • Use Makaton, PECS, visual timetables and sensory approaches (training provided).
  • Create a calm, safe, and structured learning environment.
  • Assist with personal care, mobility and feeding as required (training provided).
  • Support pupils during lessons, therapy sessions and community activities.
  • Encourage positive communication, social interaction and independence.

Learning Support Assistant – LSA

Location: Portsmouth

Start Date: ASAP

Contract: Full-Time

Salary: £96 - £105 per day

Masterclass Education is proud to be working in partnership with a number of specialist SEN schools across Portsmouth. These schools provide high-quality education and support for pupils aged 3–19 with a range of additional needs, including Autism, ADHD, complex learning difficulties, and physical or sensory needs.

Each setting is known for its inclusive and nurturing environment, highly dedicated staff teams, and strong commitment to supporting every pupil to reach their full potential both academically and personally. The Role

As part of the support team, you will play a vital role in helping pupils access learning and develop confidence, independence, and social skills.

  • Supporting pupils aged 3–19 with a range of additional needs including Autism, communication difficulties, and complex learning needs
  • Working closely with teachers, therapists, and other professionals to support personalised learning and development
  • Supporting the delivery of engaging and differentiated learning activities in line with individual education plans
  • Using specialist communication strategies such as Makaton, PECS, visual timetables, and sensory approaches (training can be provided)
  • Helping to create a calm, safe, and structured learning environment that promotes positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing
  • Providing support with personal care, mobility, and feeding where required (full training and support available)
  • Assisting pupils during lessons, therapy sessions, and community-based learning activities
  • Encouraging positive communication, social interaction, and independence

Essential Requirements
  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative school team
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
  • A positive attitude and commitment to helping every pupil achieve their personal best
