Job summary

Novus is seeking a Learning Needs Support Practitioner to join the education team at HMP Birmingham. You will identify learning barriers, develop tailored strategies, and deliver one-to-one and small-group support to help learners engage and progress.

The role is permanent, full-time (37 hours per week), with benefits including generous annual leave, wellbeing time, pension, and employee support schemes.

Qualifications

• Hold Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy (Grade C or above).
• Hold Level 2 in Hidden Difficulties / Learning Support or willing to work towards.
• Experience supporting learners with diverse needs and challenging behaviour.

Are you passionate about helping learners overcome barriers and reach their full potential? We’re seeking a dedicated Learning Needs Support Practitioner to join our supportive education team. In this rewarding role, you’ll work closely with learners to identify individual support needs, develop practical strategies, and provide tailored one-to-one and small-group support that helps them engage, progress and succeed. You’ll collaborate with tutors and wider support teams to promote inclusive learning, build confidence, and ensure every learner is supported and empowered to achieve meaningful outcomes.

We have a great opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Birmingham, working as a Learning Needs Support Practitioner. This role is offered on a permanent, full-time basis, working 37 hours per week.

Site Information

HMP Birmingham is situated in Winson Green, close to the centre of the city and is a category B prison for remand and sentenced adult males. The teams' aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe, and where causes of prison stress are minimised. The prison’s mission is to provide a secure, safe, and rehabilitative environment that encourages positive change and prepares inmates for a successful reintegration into society.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

• Hold level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy (Grade c or grade 4 and above)
• Hold a Level 2 qualification in Hidden Difficulties/Learning Support or equivalent, or be willing to work towards within an agreed timescale
• Have a track record or good understanding of working effectively with learners presenting with challenging behaviour
• Have a good understanding of how people learn and methods which can be used to enhance a learning experience
• Have experience of supporting the learning of individuals and/or groups
• Have experience or a good understanding of how to empower learners with a range of abilities and support needs
• Have some experience of successful working in an effective multi-disciplinary team
• Commit to producing accurate and timely reporting and to positive team working
