Job summary

Lancashire County Council is seeking a Senior Drainage Design Engineer (Highways) in Preston to lead drainage design across major schemes, including school building programmes and SuDS. You will provide specialist expertise across council services and mentor engineering staff.

The role offers a permanent, full-time position with hybrid working, a salary £42,123 to £47,665 per annum and generous benefits. Closing date 13/11/2026.

Qualifications

• Proven background in drainage design and delivery with AutoCAD and hydraulic modelling.
• Degree in Civil Engineering or related field, or a professional qualification.
• Experience managing projects to budget and programme.

Responsibilities

• Leading the design and construction supervision of drainage elements for major highway and infrastructure schemes, including our school building programme.
• Producing Flood Risk Assessments and supporting planning applications.
• Reviewing external drainage submissions to ensure compliance with national and local standards, including SuDS.
• Mentoring and developing engineering staff.
• Preparing innovative design solutions, technical drawings, schedules and engineering documentation.
• Collaborating with contractors and stakeholders to deliver projects safely and on programme.
