Job summary

Rolls-Royce SMR Limited is seeking a Lead Engineer to define functional design for nuclear safety C&I systems. You will lead technical work across front-end and conceptual phases, establishing design intent and translating plant needs into implementable requirements.

You will mentor junior engineers and coordinate multiple work packages, with hybrid site options Derby, Manchester or Warrington. Strong knowledge of IEC standards is essential.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in C&I functional design within safety-critical industries.
• Strong understanding of control theory, process control and system architecture.
• Experience defining top-level functional specifications for C&I systems.
• Knowledge of safety concepts, redundancy and diversity.
• Experience with nuclear or equivalent safety-critical standards.
• Familiarity with hazard analysis techniques (HAZOP, FMEA, PSA).
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Ability to lead technically across multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead the functional design of control and protection systems for nuclear safety applications.
• Define and own C&I functional requirements for SMR safety systems.
• Translate plant-level requirements into structured control functions.
• Provide technical authority and assurance for safety-related C&I design.
• Ensure compliance with nuclear and safety standards (IEC 61508/61513/61226).
• Support safety-case development and cross-disciplinary decision making.
• Lead and coordinate multiple functional design work packages.
• Engage with architects, system owners and safety teams.
