Job summary

Suffolk County Council is seeking a Junior Content Designer to join the Content Design team within Customer Experience and Digital. You will help ensure our websites remain accessible, accurate and user-focused for thousands of residents each month.

The role is 22 hours per week, with hybrid or remote working options and occasional attendance at Endeavour House in Ipswich. You’ll collaborate with Content Designers and service teams to improve online content and accessibility.

Junior Content Designer

Pay: £14.82 per hour

Working Pattern: 22 hours per week within core hours of Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm

Location: Hybrid or remote working available, with occasional attendance at Endeavour House, Ipswich

Contract: Fixed Term until 31st March 2027

Opus People Solutions are recruiting on behalf of Suffolk County Council for a Junior Content Designer to join their Content Design team within Customer Experience and Digital. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong communication skills, attention to detail and an interest in digital content to develop their career within a supportive and collaborative team. Working alongside three Content Designers, you will help ensure Suffolk County Council's websites remain accessible, accurate and user-focused for the hundreds of thousands of people who use them every month.We're looking for an organised and proactive individual who enjoys problem solving, working with colleagues across an organisation and making continuous improvements to digital content and user experience.

About the Role

As a Junior Content Designer, you'll play an important role in the day-to-day management and quality assurance of Suffolk County Council's websites and microsites. You'll help maintain content standards, review user feedback, support accessibility compliance and assist Content Designers with ongoing projects and website improvements.

The role is predominantly internally focused, working closely with council colleagues, trained content editors and service teams to ensure online information is accurate, accessible and meets organisational standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitoring and fixing broken links, formatting issues and content inconsistencies across Suffolk County Council websites and microsites.
  • Reviewing customer feedback received through websites and working with service teams to resolve content issues and improve user experience.
  • Supporting accessibility compliance by identifying and correcting issues affecting users of assistive technologies, including screen readers.
  • Reviewing new and updated web content to ensure it meets content standards, accessibility requirements and best practice guidelines.
  • Supporting Content Designers with project work and website improvement initiatives.
  • Publishing, editing and maintaining website content using the council's content management system.
  • Triaging and responding to content-related requests from internal colleagues.
  • Supporting and guiding trained content editors across the organisation.
  • Helping maintain efficient team processes, workflows and content governance practices.
  • Assisting with website analytics reporting and content performance monitoring.
  • Contributing to user-focused improvements through feedback reviews, surveys and content evaluations.
About the Team

The Content Design team is responsible for improving the accessibility, usability and overall user experience of Suffolk County Council's digital content.

The team manages content across suffolk.gov.uk and a number of microsites, ensuring information is clear, accessible and compliant with public sector standards. Working in a collaborative environment, the team follows Government Digital Service (GDS) principles and places user needs at the centre of everything they do.

The wider content team typically works from the office two days per week, with the Content Design team usually attending on Thursdays. However, this position can be worked remotely or on a hybrid basis depending on individual circumstances.

  • Experience using content management systems (CMS) or a willingness to learn.
  • A customer-focused mindset with a genuine interest in improving online user experiences.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of content design principles and plain English writing.
  • Understanding of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • Experience working with website analytics tools such as Google Analytics.
  • Experience supporting website improvement or digital transformation projects.
  • Knowledge of user research or user experience (UX) methodologies.
  • Experience using AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
