UKCEH is seeking an experienced IT Infrastructure Team Lead to join our talented team. You will contribute to scientific discovery and provide data, insights, and solutions to help researchers, businesses, and governments address complex environmental challenges.

Role Overview

Join our dynamic, cross-functional team where you'll collaborate with other IT managers to develop strategies, policies, and procedures to enhance our IT services. A strong technical background in infrastructure management, automation tooling, and infrastructure practices is essential.

You will lead a multidisciplinary team across multiple sites, ensuring the delivery of a resilient, high-performing computing environment that supports UKCEH's evolving needs. Your leadership, team-building, and continuous improvement skills will be vital.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Managing the day-to-day operations of the IT Infrastructure team.
  2. Monitoring and reporting service requirements, and assisting in infrastructure development.
  3. Developing and maintaining a stable, resilient, and recoverable infrastructure based on industry best practices.
  4. Documenting, auditing, and improving processes used by the Infrastructure Team.
  5. Implementing the strategic vision for IT at UKCEH.
  6. Ensuring security by design in all infrastructure requirements.
  7. Building and managing relationships with vendors and service providers.
  8. Coordinating multiple cross-functional initiatives and projects.
Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Experience in an infrastructure support role with a strong technical background, willing to operate hands-on.
  • Proven leadership and change management skills.
  • Experience supporting infrastructure across multiple sites in an SME environment.
  • Technical project management experience (rollouts, upgrades, migrations).
  • Skills supporting hardware and technologies such as Microsoft M365, AD, Azure, VMware, Storage, Backup, Windows Server, Linux.
  • Strong networking skills including firewalls, TCP/IP, subnetting, routing, and switching.
  • Experience with automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
  • Knowledge of AWS and block storage is advantageous.
  • Critical thinking and adaptability in systems and procedures.
  • Effective communication skills, able to explain complex concepts simply.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including listening and questioning.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
