We are looking for a proactive and user-focused IT Field Engineer to join our growing Garden Centre group. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands‑on IT professional who enjoys a varied role across support, installations, upgrades and project delivery.
Reporting to the IT Manager, the successful candidate will support and maintain existing infrastructure, assist with new store acquisitions and deliver technology improvements across multiple locations throughout the UK. The role requires a practical problem‑solver who can work independently on site, communicate clearly with end users and maintain high standards of service and documentation.
The role is based at our Northern Head Office in Brigg, with frequent travel to sites nationwide. Flexibility to travel and stay away overnight when required is essential.
Role Responsibilities
- Install, configure, maintain and support IT hardware and infrastructure across stores, operations and office locations, including computers, tills, printers, phones, switches, routers and wireless equipment.
- Travel to sites nationwide to carry out installations, equipment replacements, upgrades, fault diagnosis and repairs with minimal disruption to business operations. Support new store acquisitions and refurbishments by preparing, deploying and testing IT equipment and network connectivity.
- Troubleshoot hardware, software and network issues on site, escalating more complex problems where appropriate and ensuring timely resolution.
- Assist with user support for core business systems and Microsoft technologies, including Windows 11 and Microsoft 365 applications. Carry out basic network cabling, patching and tests to support reliable site infrastructure.
- Maintain accurate records of installations, asset movements, repairs, site visits and technical documentation.
- Work closely with the wider IT team, third‑party suppliers and site managers to deliver support, upgrades and project work to a high standard.
- Follow company health and safety procedures when working on site, using tools, lifting equipment and carrying out physical installations. Provide a professional and user‑focused service, building positive working relationships with colleagues across the business.
Technical Requirements
- Proven hands‑on experience in an IT field support, field engineering or site‑based IT role. Strong practical knowledge of installing, configuring and supporting desktop and laptop hardware, peripherals and mobile devices. Working knowledge of EPOS systems, including installation, configuration, support and basic troubleshooting. Experience of network cabling, patching, installation and basic network troubleshooting.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve hardware, software and connectivity issues efficiently and methodically.
- Good working knowledge of Windows 11 and Microsoft 365 applications.
- Confidence using hand tools and carrying out physical installation work safely and effectively.
- Understanding of switches, routers, wireless access points and general LAN/WAN concepts. Experience of printer, telephone and other site‑based IT hardware support.
- Ability to document work completed accurately, including asset updates, support notes and installation records. Basic knowledge of Active Directory, user account administration and device setup would be advantageous. Experience supporting multi‑site retail, hospitality or distributed business environments would be beneficial.
Person Specification
- Previous experience in a field‑based IT support or engineering role is essential. Excellent fault‑finding and problem‑solving skills, with a practical and methodical approach. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support users at all levels of the business.
- Well organised, self‑motivated and able to manage workload effectively while travelling between sites. Reliable, professional and committed to delivering a high standard of customer service. Able to learn quickly and adapt to new systems, technologies and changing business priorities. Good attention to detail and accurate record‑keeping.
- Experience working in a fast‑paced, multi‑site environment would be advantageous.
