We are recruiting a Head of Finance to join a well-established and growing construction business based in Hull, East Yorkshire. This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for the full finance function, providing both hands-on financial control and strategic support to the Board.
The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening financial governance, supporting growth, and ensuring robust reporting in line with UK GAAP.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Control
- Lead and manage the finance function, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting
- Maintain clean, well-controlled accounts in line with UK GAAP
- Oversee monthly management accounts, balance sheet reconciliations and cash flow reporting
- Maintain the fixed asset register and oversee capital expenditure
Statutory, Tax & Compliance
- Prepare and coordinate statutory accounts under UK GAAP
- Manage the annual audit process and act as primary contact for auditors
- Oversee Corporation Tax, VAT, CIS and PAYE compliance
- Ensure all HMRC and Companies House obligations are met on time
- Stay up to date with changes in accounting standards and legislation
Commercial & Strategic Support
- Partner with the Managing Director and Board to support business strategy
- Lead budgeting, forecasting and scenario planning
- Provide commercial insight on contracts, margins and project performance
- Support funding requirements, banking relationships and cash management
Systems & Process Improvement
- Own and develop finance systems and controls (ERP / accounting software)
- Drive continuous improvement in reporting, processes and internal controls
Team Leadership
- Lead, develop and mentor the finance team
- Build a high-performing, commercially focused finance function
Candidate Profile
- Fully qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA)
- Proven experience in a senior finance role within construction, engineering or a project-based environment
- Strong knowledge of UK GAAP and statutory reporting
- Commercially minded with the ability to influence senior stakeholders
- Hands-on, pragmatic and comfortable in an SME environment
