Job summary

Intelix.AI is seeking a hands-on mainframe engineer for a 6 month contract in the UK, hybrid with 3 days onsite in Sheffield/Birmingham. The role focuses on migrating critical workloads from legacy mainframe to modern platforms for a Tier 1 bank.

You will own migration waves from discovery to cutover, working across application, infrastructure and testing teams under delivery pressure. Cloud and distributed target platforms knowledge is desirable.

This is a hands-on mainframe migration role on one of the UK's largest modernisation programmes, moving a Tier 1 bank's critical workloads off legacy mainframe onto modern platforms.

Who this is for

A hands-on mainframe engineer with deep z/OS, COBOL, JCL, CICS and DB2 experience and a track record of modernisation or migration delivery in a large enterprise, ideally a Tier 1 bank. Comfortable working across application, infrastructure and business teams under delivery pressure.

What you bring

• Strong hands-on mainframe experience: z/OS, COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2 (IMS or VSAM a plus)
• A track record on mainframe modernisation or migration in a large enterprise
• Working across application, infrastructure and business teams under delivery pressure
• Tier 1 banking experience, ideally
• Modernisation tooling (e.g. Micro Focus/Rocket, AWS Mainframe Modernization, IBM Z tooling)
• Knowledge of cloud or distributed target platforms (Java, Linux, containers)

What you will own

Own the migration picture: analysis of mainframe applications, batch, data and interfaces. Own migration waves from discovery and design through to cutover and hypercare. Own the refactoring, re-platforming or retirement of COBOL/JCL workloads alongside application and testing teams. Own data and functional parity validation so migrated services run safely in production. Own the runbooks, patterns and standards that speed up later waves.
