Job summary

Searchability is seeking an Infrastructure Engineer in Birkenhead to own a broad MS-focused estate, including 365, Azure, Windows Server, AD and networking. The role involves hands-on problem solving and gradually taking on future cloud/DevOps direction.

You’ll work onsite five days a week in Birkenhead, with scope to influence infrastructure evolution and security, backups, and disaster recovery. Prioritise independent work and clear documentation.

Qualifications

• Strong Microsoft 365 / Office 365 administration experience.
• Experience with Microsoft Azure administration and Windows Server.
• Knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy and Hyper-V.
• Networking fundamentals and VPNs, DNS/DHCP/TCP/IP.
• Experience with backups, DR planning and infrastructure projects.
• Comfortable working with documentation and cross-team communication.

Responsibilities

• Own broad infrastructure areas, including Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows Server and networking.
• Investigate issues, troubleshoot independently and drive to resolution.
• Contribute to future hosting, cloud options and DevOps initiatives.

INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEER – BIRKENHEAD

ABOUT THE CLIENT

We’re working with an established professional services business where technology is central to the day-to-day operation of the organisation.

They’re looking for an experienced Infrastructure Engineer to join a small technical team, taking genuine ownership across their infrastructure estate whilst supporting the wider business when required.

This isn’t a traditional support role. It’s an opportunity for someone who enjoys solving problems independently, getting involved across the full infrastructure environment and gradually taking on more responsibility for the future direction of the technology estate.

THE INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEER ROLE

You’ll work across a broad Microsoft-focused infrastructure environment covering Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows Server, Active Directory, Hyper-V, virtual machines, networking, security, backups and disaster recovery.

There will still be an element of day-to-day user and operational support, particularly initially, but the role goes considerably further than resolving tickets.

You’ll be expected to investigate infrastructure issues, use existing technical documentation, troubleshoot problems independently and take ownership through to resolution.

As you develop within the business, you’ll also become increasingly involved in infrastructure projects and the longer-term evolution of the environment.

This will include helping the business assess future hosting and cloud infrastructure options, researching potential solutions and providers, understanding technical and commercial considerations and helping make recommendations around the best approach.

Longer term, there will also be the opportunity to work increasingly closely with the development team and develop your knowledge of Cloud, automation and DevOps.

INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEER ESSENTIAL SKILLS

• Strong Microsoft 365 / Office 365 administration experience
• Microsoft Azure administration
• Windows Server administration
• Active Directory and Group Policy
• Hyper-V and virtual machine management
• Networking fundamentals including DNS, DHCP, VPNs and TCP/IP
• Infrastructure troubleshooting and problem solving
• Backup, recovery and disaster recovery
• Experience contributing to infrastructure projects
• Ability to investigate unfamiliar technical problems independently
• Comfortable taking ownership rather than relying heavily on escalation
• Strong documentation and communication skills
• Experience with Google Workspace would also be beneficial.

THE PERSON

The environment will suit someone who enjoys having a broad remit.

It’s a small business and technical team, so you’ll need to be comfortable getting involved, taking responsibility and occasionally picking up something that might sit outside a traditional infrastructure job description.

You don’t need to arrive as a finished Cloud or DevOps Engineer.

What’s more important is having strong infrastructure fundamentals, being naturally inquisitive and having the ability to pick up unfamiliar technologies and problems quickly.

This could be particularly attractive if you’re currently working within a larger infrastructure team and want an opportunity where you can have more ownership, become involved in bigger technical decisions and develop towards Cloud and DevOps engineering.
