George Baker Shipping in Felixstowe is seeking a reliable Import Operator to join our logistics team. The role focuses on preparing and processing customs declarations, liaising with customers and suppliers, and ensuring shipments are cleared efficiently.

Key duties include handling import documentation, maintaining accurate data in internal systems, and supporting colleagues to keep shipments moving on time.

Qualifications

• Experience in customs clearance or freight forwarding is advantageous but training is provided.
• Office/administration experience is advantageous.
• Must be able to use Microsoft Office, especially Outlook and Excel.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and process customs clearance documentation.
• Assist with import customs declarations.
• Check invoices, packing lists and other shipping documents.
• Enter and maintain accurate information in internal systems.
• Liaise with customers, hauliers, freight forwarders and other parties.
• Monitor shipments and provide updates as required.
• Ensure customs procedures and company processes are followed.
• Respond to queries by email and telephone in a professional manner.
• Keep accurate records and filing documentation; work with colleagues to process shipments efficiently.
• Stay up to date with relevant customs procedures and requirements with training provided.

The successful applicant will assist with the preparation and processing of customs declarations, liaise with customers and suppliers, and ensure shipments are cleared accurately and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

• Preparing and processing customs clearance documentation
• Assisting with import customs declarations
• Checking invoices, packing lists and other relevant shipping documents
• Entering and maintaining accurate information on internal systems
• Liaising with customers, hauliers, freight forwarders and other relevant parties
• Monitoring shipments and providing updates where required
• Ensuring customs procedures and company processes are followed
• Responding to queries by email and telephone in a professional manner
• Maintaining accurate records and filing documentationWorking closely with colleagues to ensure shipments are processed efficiently

Skills and Experience

• Previous experience in customs clearance or freight forwarding would be an advantage, but is not essential (training and support will be provided)
• Previous experience in an office or administration environment would be advantageous
• Proven experience using Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook and Excel
• Organised and able to work accurately
• Able to communicate effectively by telephone and email
• Able to manage their workload and meet deadlines
