Job summary

Satellite Applications Catapult seeks a designer who creates clarity where ambiguity exists, shaping the right problem and guiding teams from discussion to decision. You will facilitate workshops, produce tangible artefacts, and translate learnings into actionable recommendations, collaborating across engineers, researchers, and business stakeholders.

This role is not senior but requires taking ownership with light direction, and it offers a hybrid working policy with a focus on collaboration

Qualifications

• Experience in a design role with ability to take ownership of meaningful work without heavy supervision.
• Ability to turn complexity into structure and structure into decisions.
• Experience planning and running interviews and stakeholder engagement, turning findings into insights.
• Ability to design and lead workshops with mixed groups to achieve focused outcomes.
• Comfort with making artefacts to move work forward at appropriate fidelity.
• Experience working with businesses to develop a sustainable business case.
• Ability to drive work forward and maintain momentum across multiple stakeholders.
• Experience engaging externally and building relationships with partners.
• Strong commercial awareness: budgeting, timelines, and organisational realities.
• Comfort with in-person collaboration to accelerate progress.

Responsibilities

• Create clarity in ambiguity by identifying the real problem and defining success.
• Design and run workshops that produce clear choices, priorities and next steps.
• Produce sketches, journeys, service blueprints, flows, prototypes to test ideas.
• Plan and conduct user and stakeholder research, synthesize findings, translate into actions.
• Facilitate collaboration between specialists to represent user needs and delivery constraints.
• Ask fundamental questions early to reveal gaps, risks, and critical assumptions.
• Support delivery by clarifying scope, trade-offs and acceptance criteria.
• Improve templates and ways of working within the UCD team.
