Job summary

AECOM is seeking an experienced Associate Director to lead end-to-end HV substation design for a varied energy infrastructure portfolio in the UK or Ireland. You will lead technical discussions with clients and multidisciplinary teams, delivering from concept to energisation on high-profile projects.

You will apply lifecycle design expertise, mentor junior engineers, and maintain strong safety and standards compliance across deliverables.

Qualifications

• Proven experience delivering HV infrastructure design at concept, FEED, and detailed design stages.
• Strong understanding of electrical AC HV plant and equipment – AIS and GIS.
• Experience with National Grid standards and specifications.
• Proposal and bid development experience, including multi-discipline submissions.
• Design management and site construction review experience; primary plant focus.
• Familiarity with control systems, transformers, HVDC, interconnectors and protections is advantageous.
• Ideally CDAE / LCDAE approval.

Responsibilities

• Lead HV substation technical discussions with clients and multi-disciplinary teams, establishing scopes and interfaces.
• Direct the technical delivery of substation design major projects, monitor progress and quality-check deliverables.
• Apply lifecycle expertise from grid connection studies to FEED and detailed design.
• Liaise with project management to develop resourcing forecasts and programmes aligned to construction schedules.
• Demonstrate commercial awareness through proposal development and opportunity identification to expand HV scope.
• Build trusted relationships with clients and understand their grid connection strategies and availability.
• Champion safety in design across HV substation deliverables and ensure standards compliance.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers to grow team capability in HV substations.
