Job summary

Peterborough City Council is seeking a Housing Compliance Officer to join the Housing Standards team in Peterborough. You will help raise standards in the private rented sector, inspect properties, investigate complaints and ensure compliance with housing legislation.

You will provide guidance, but can take enforcement action when needed to protect residents and improve housing standards. The role offers varied workload and collaboration with Environmental Health, Planning and Community Safety.

Qualifications

• Experience in housing regulation, environmental health, compliance or enforcement.
• Knowledge of housing legislation including the Housing Act.
• Experience inspecting properties and identifying hazards or compliance issues.
• Strong investigative and report-writing skills.
• Ability to interpret and apply legislation practically and proportionately.
• Good organisational skills with a varied caseload management.
• Customer-focused approach and commitment to positive outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Carry out inspections of residential properties.
• Investigate housing-related complaints and service requests.
• Assess properties using housing legislation and guidance.
• Prepare schedules of work, notices and enforcement documentation.
• Work with landlords and agents to achieve compliance and improvements.
• Support licensing, enforcement and housing improvement initiatives.
• Maintain accurate records and case management systems.
• Represent the Council professionally when dealing with residents and partners.
