Job description

We're looking for a proactive, practical and people‑focused House Assistant to help keep Future Dreams House running smoothly day‑to‑day. This role is a mix of front‑of‑house, operations and sustainability work, ensuring the building feels like a five‑star space for visitors, volunteers and staff alike.

Responsibilities
  • House Operations & Maintenance: Open and close the House; carry out daily security, safety and presentation checks; keep all spaces tidy, clean and well‑stocked; run errands such as supermarket and post office trips; manage waste, recycling and laundry; set up rooms for workshops and events; support minor maintenance tasks and contractor visits.
  • Front of House & Visitor Support: Provide a warm welcome to every visitor; help sign‑in, complete forms and find destinations; offer refreshments and give tours; answer phone and email enquiries with empathy and efficiency; support booking systems and maintain accurate calendars.
  • Administration & Communications: Manage the main info@ inbox; keep room and workshop booking calendars up to date; handle incoming and outgoing post, including packaging, labelling, post office runs and recycling; respond to information requests and distribute leaflets and visitor materials.
  • Volunteer Support: Work alongside volunteers, guiding and supporting them through tasks; coordinate volunteer activity, especially with the House Manager away; provide simple on‑the‑job training for front desk support, room set‑up and kitchen duties.
  • Sustainability: Act as the sustainability champion; promote eco‑friendly practices around energy use, recycling, waste reduction and sourcing; help shape and track progress against sustainability goals; engage the team and volunteers in greener ways of working.
  • Health & Safety: Act as First Aider and Fire Marshal (full training provided); support fire safety checks, drills and wider health & safety procedures; help during evacuations and report any incidents or hazards promptly.
  • Organisational Support: Work collaboratively with colleagues across programmes, fundraising and operations; support internal and external events as needed; carry out any other reasonable duties within the role.

Essential Experience

Skills & Knowledge
  • Confident using Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to navigate online booking platforms and digital systems (training provided).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organisation and time‑management; able to juggle multiple tasks.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety principles (or willingness to learn).
  • Calm, professional approach when under pressure or dealing with sensitive situations.
