Job summary

Leicester City Council’s Highways Maintenance Service is hiring a skilled roadworker to lay and rake tarmac and bituminous surfaces, carry out general labouring on highways, sewers and watercourses, and work as part of a small team under the Contracts Supervisor. The role is 37 hours per week with fixed day shifts and an out-of-hours standby rota including weekends and bank holidays.

A full C1/C1E or Class 1 or 2 HGV licence is preferred, with opportunities for training and relocation assistance

Qualifications

• Good surface finish without roller marks.
• Understanding health, safety, environmental requirements and safe working procedures.
• Good numeracy to take measurements and calculate areas, volumes and weights.

Responsibilities

• Lay and rake tarmac and bituminous surfacing by hand or machine to high precision and tight tolerances.
• Carry out general manual and labouring tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of highways, sewers and watercourses.
• Lay paving materials on roads, footpaths and drainage features.
• Work under the guidance of the Contracts Supervisor as part of a team.
• Use power-assisted tools, minor plant and machinery.
• Drive, clean and carry out routine maintenance of vehicles and plant.
• Plan and prioritise work to meet productivity targets.
• Comply with health and safety, environmental and works specification requirements.
• Respond to highway call-outs after hours on the City Highways standby rota, at weekends and on bank holidays.
• Work overtime, including extra weekday hours and weekend working, to meet operational needs.
• Work on site across the city and occasionally further afield
