Job summary

NY Highways is seeking an experienced Highways Officer to join the Highways Operations team in Selby, North Yorkshire. You will help manage and maintain one of England's largest local highway networks, ensuring safe travel for communities, businesses and visitors.

The role combines site-based work, technical decision-making, contractor management and community engagement, with opportunities to influence highway maintenance programmes and respond to winter conditions.

Qualifications

  • Experience working within highways maintenance or civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of highway inspection and maintenance practices.
  • Experience planning, coordinating or monitoring works programmes.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and solve problems effectively.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

  • Managing highway inspections and ensuring compliance with required standards and service levels.
  • Identifying and ordering maintenance works to address defects and maintain network safety.
  • Liaising with contractors, local authorities, parish councils and members of the public on highway matters.
  • Supporting the delivery of routine and reactive highway maintenance programmes.
  • Playing a key role in winter maintenance and emergency response.
  • Assisting with customer enquiries and highway-related investigations.
  • Monitoring performance information and supporting continuous service improvement.

About the role

As a Highways Officer, you will be responsible for managing and monitoring highway maintenance activities within the Selby area, ensuring the network remains safe and serviceable for all users. Working closely with colleagues, contractors, local stakeholders and members of the public, you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality highway maintenance services. This is a varied role that combines technical knowledge, problem solving and stakeholder engagement, offering the chance to make a visible difference within local communities

Key responsibilities

Essential
  • Experience working within highways maintenance, highways operations or civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of highway inspection and maintenance practices.
  • Experience planning, coordinating or monitoring works programmes.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and solve problems effectively.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • Relevant highways or civil engineering qualification.
  • Experience managing highway defects and repairs.
  • Knowledge of highways legislation and network management duties.
  • Experience responding to customer enquiries or public liability matters.
  • Salary of £38,622 to £41,949 with annual pay progression
